SCOPES OF MY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

My duties and responsibilities are tied to my identities. As a daughter, sister, cousin, niece, wife, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, mother, and a friend are all part of my identities, while being a citizen, a student and a poet. Of these, which do I hold close to my heart, which means a lot to me, also becomes important when I list my scopes. Above all, what am I today, plays a major role. Being a citizen, a poet, a wife, a mother, a friend, and a student- are on top of the list of identities for me, as of this time and place in my life.

Being a good citizen, irrespective of nationality, is the first thing.

Duties of a good citizen are a lot more than a few that I list here :

1- Be responsible for my actions.

2- Follow the rules and regulations (paying taxes, road safety, neighborhood etiquettes... etc.)

3- Respect my fellow citizens.

4- Help someone in need (will ask if help is needed, first).

5- NOT ill-treat anyone.

Being a poet, I have certain duties towards my readers, fans.

1- Respect every reader/ fan.

2- Be considerate towards readers’ sensitivity before countering their comments.

3- Have open mind and listen to fans.

4- Be responsible for my views.

5- NOT to put down one reader/fan for the sake of (in front of) another one.

Being a wife and mother: Duties of a wife/mother has very wide spectrum, depending on the culture, customs, family, and person. Here are some, that I follow:

1- Be supportive and encouraging in husband’s carrier decisions; and similarly to my son too.

2- Prepare meals and snacks.

3- Be a good friend to my husband and son.

4- Do the laundry and take out the garbage, do the housekeeping (not a top priority, anyway).

5- NOT to be judgmental.

Being a friend, I would:

1- Be supportive and encouraging at times; have fun and engaging as well.

2- Comment and criticize, depending on the context, in a constructive manner.

3- Listen to my friends’ heartaches and shortcomings, and not be judgmental.

4- Be there!!

5- NOT humiliate or insult my friends.

Being a student, I would:

1- Respect my teachers and classmates.

2- Do my home works/ assignments.

3- Provide any help, if needed, to fellow students.

4- Attend the classes, regularly.

5- NOT be disruptive in any class-sessions.

Yes, Teju, it is very difficult to manage all of these duties and responsibilities at the same time.
After 4+ decades of being a daughter and a citizen, almost 3 decades with my pen and words, 2+ decades of married life, being on the last teen year of motherhood, and being a student and friend all along... there are so many many things that I can not manage and handle at the same time. I take one step at a time, and do so to the best of my ability. That has worked for me so far!
Good Luck.

Puttiya amma, You are right. Once we become moms, we do multitasking, without our knowledge. Only when we put them in writing that we realize the extent of our daily routine. And when we take time to ponder over our days that we wonder, "did we do all that?"
Time is the biggest and best(est) teacher; very true. Good Luck to you as well.
